3 inch displays
with LED backlight
First shipment in September 2007
Roger Smith, SSI Project Manager, from Meggitt Avionics writes:
In the first week of September 2007 we shipped our first customer orders for SFD and SFDR units fitted with LED backlight displays. These units were shipped to a major US helicopter manufacturer.
The shipping of these units represents a tangible milestone for us by giving considerable operational display performance benefits over the previous CCFL variant.
The new LED backlight produces a much brighter display to offset any high ambient light levels (e.g. a fighter aircraft with a bubble-type canopy), an improved colour range (useful for threat warning) with the capability of allowing the display to be set to a default green background if required (very low power). A lot of interest has been generated by this functional capability, placing us in a very favourable position compared to our competition.
The development has taken a year and half from initial design, prototype to the production version which is now being shipped. This has been achieved by close collaboration between the Meggitt Engineering team and PJB Systems on the design, with input from PED on the productionisation aspects with both Phoenix and Meggitt Engineering. The aim is that the LED backlight will become a standard-fit on future SFD, 3” Threat Warning indicators, SFDRs and EMDs display products.
"Thanks to all involved in the project at Meggitt, together with PJB Systems and Phoenix for achieving these notable shipments."
